I just love how Elena uses touching Damon’s face as a way to calm him, reassure him, and comfort him. It’s something he has done with her so many times and it is a way that they communicate without needing words. By stroking his face Elena is able to communicate “I’m here”, “This is real”, “I need you”, “I want you”, “I love you”. And just her touch is enough to convey to him all the things he needs to hear and wants to hear. The things his insecurities sometimes cant tolerate the words for, but just her touch conveys it just the same.
